@msjen just athens in greece, and also skopje. In fact i'm now waiting for the night train to thessaloniki and then connect to a train to skopje in the morning.
Hmm, i hope i'm on the right train. The platform is right but there was no indication on the train. I vaguely heard some broadcast in english... Oh well, let's see where i end up when i wake up!
And greek guys are indeed hot too. Somehow i ended up in a section of the train filled with greek army guys (unintentionally, i swear!). Didn't sleep well... nothing to do with them guys, uh, i mean... Hehe, kidding. Twas because the train seats are hard, train was swaying and bumping a bit too much, and it was actually cold in the train. So after 7 hours, i'm in Thessaloniki (yay, i was on the right train!), and totally exhausted to make use of the 2 hours i have before the next train to skopje.
And train tickets are cheap! Athens-Thess. was 20€ one-way, and Thess.-Skopje is only 24.40€ return! More expensive just to get from Tampere to Helsinki. Granted, the trains are not as new/clean/smooth as the finnish ones... I even saw a baby cockroach at one point. Hope i didn't swallow any in my sleep.
Singapore passport is a bright bloody red that catches attention. At both passport control points (leaving greece and entering macedonia), the officers stare at it and go "hmm. Singapore." and spend more time examining it than the other passports. :P
In skopje. Walked 20 min from the train station to the hostel in the hot sun, drenched in sweat. No air-con in hostel. Now headache and back/shoulder pain. I'm too old for this. Maybe should have planned a more comfy vacation instead of "roughing it out"?
Spent the day roaming (and sweating) around skopje. Food/drinks/transport is cheap (15c for ice cream, a small one, but still!), clothing/shoes reasonable, but electronics (cameras/phones) as expensive as in Finland!
People are nice, generally friendly, women dress sexily (due to the heat?). Still get stares quite often... Some guys waved and called out "japan! Japan!". Not a tourist town, couldn't find any souvenir shop (wanted to get a shot glass for my sis).
Supposed to meet a friend (@nokian) for dinner but he couldn't make it due to family emergency. Made some new friends at the hostel and had dinner with one of them instead, who had some intriguing life stories.
Eek! Summer is over in finland? Well, it's still full blast here, i'm perspiring in the early morning... Had to wake up really early (5:30am!!) to catch the train and now it's delayed for 2 hrs. I could've slept for 2 more hrs!
@cybette not quite over yet, the days are still warm(ish), but there is definatley a bit of a chill in the air during late evening.
Oh, and I have noticed that electronics are approximatly the same price over most of Europe, Iguess that is due to the fact that people buying them can use the Intardwebs to check for prices, and they don't rot when shipped.
Train was late by 2.5 hrs, and this is normal it seems. Instead of squeezing with everyone into the first few cars, i walked towards the end of the train and got in one of the last cars. Good thing too, it was half empty, had air-con (not in all cars) and is one of the newer ones. Napped for the most part, woken up by passport control. Now waiting for passport on the greek side of the border.
Hmm just realised i haven't eaten all day except for that bday ice-cream and a couple pieces of bread i had with me. Oh well, let's wait till breakfast... Hope it's good
Can of coke: take away 1€, sit down in the cafe 3€. Wtf? 2€ for service? I can open my own can, thank you!
Otherwise, athens is great. Decided to do a bit of shopping after walking tour. Found a brand called stradivarius that i like, never seen it b4, also like the music connection.
No broken dishes or furniture, but something's wrong with me. I threw up everything i ate yesterday (which wasn't much to begin with). It's not the drinking either, i only had a couple of beers and a couple of cocktails. Now i'm feeling weak, constant pins and needles in my hands, and trying to eat a salad but no appetite.
Was it the cheap Souvlaki, the over-priced mojitos, or just my body complaining that this vacation was too short? :P
On plane, feeling better with fried noodles in hand. Plus flying always make me happy. Probably a nap after dinner and i'll be in helsinki. Bye greece, you have been great, even though i suffered some towards the end...
Thanks @cervus! Flight was great, making the others around me smell my delicious shrimp noodles. A cool breeze upon stepping out of the helsinki airport was welcoming too. But now, thanks to a very considerate housemate and his sms, i'm dreading the state of my apartment when i get back. I don't need this after a long tiring week + feeling sick.
@chelx: thanks! Finally home, lots of mess to clear up, but i guess i'll rest now and do it tomorrow. Good night everyone, thanks for being with me on this tripku!
woke up today with a sore throat because the considerate Mr. Constantinescu contaminated my bed and room with his germs. oh and speaking of beds, my bed for the past few months is actually a sofa bed. i let him have the nice proper comfy big bed, and this is how he repays me. He's not my friend anymore. He's crossed the line this time. I'm honestly angry, and I don't get this angry easily.
i'm a bit hungry but i can't cook because the kitchen is a complete mess. i don't even want to step out of my room because the rest of the apartment stinks... (my room was smelling a bit too last night when i got back but i've since aired it out). i'm a prisoner in my own apartment. what kind of logic is this?
oh, and of course he's hiding in helsinki and conveniently not around when i got back so i couldn't scream at him. he knows that i'd have cooled down somewhat by the time he gets back, because i don't (usually) stay mad for too long. but he's outdone himself this time. i told him specifically when he moved in that he could use the whole apartment, but not my room. it's my sanctuary, and i came back to trash and underwear in my room, in my CHAIR and BED. (he slept in mine while i was away probably because his own is too smelly/dirty.)
he even asked me what i wanted for my birthday, and i said simply "a clean apartment". i wasn't expecting much really, maybe just the dishes done and trash taken out. but noooooo, instead of any bit of cleaning, he made everything 100x dirtier and messier. wow, i'm amazed.
i don't need him to pay me back the rest of what he owes me, i want him out of my apartment. NOW. Should i just start throwing his things out the window/balcony? it would definitely make me feel better.
if anyone things i'm being unreasonable or should have been more understanding, please let me know. i'm trying to think what i've done wrong... i've helped him all i could as a friend, and looked out for him as a brother. is a little consideration and respect in return too much to ask for?
Ouch, bunny dear, wouldn't like to be in your shoes. :/ Altho my own aparment is a real mess too, at least I'm not inflicting it on somebody else who has been a very patient landlady and friend to Mr. C. 'Caligula' thus far. For everyone involved I hope this incident has a reasonabl resolution.
i'm not unreasonable. it's not just about the mess. i'm not exactly the cleanest/tidiest person either. in fact i think i'm messier than most guys i know. the mess i can deal with. the disrespect and inconsideration, i've had enough. he really overstepped his boundaries when he invaded MY ROOM. he has his own room with his own bed and own table. yet he's always in the kitchen using the kitchen table. even so, i let him be, and only started asking for his share of rent this month which he has yet to pay because he still owes me money from previously. he takes up all the bandwidth of my 24Mbps connection which i pay for. i try not to complain about that since he needs to work from home. i can never find a clean dish when i want to cook or eat something. i consider his needs and comfort around the apartment even when he doesn't consider mine. but when he uses MY BED and MY TABLE in MY ROOM, leaving his clothes and underwear and trash in MY HIDING PLACE (isn't it sad that i have to hide in my own apartment?), that's the last straw. he has absolutely no respect for me. again, it's not the mess. it's this utter lack of respect that is making me so angry and mad.
as well as all the empty promises. before he moved in, he said he'd help me clean the apartment and KEEP IT CLEAN. he didn't. i let it go. when my parents were coming, he promised he'll make the place shiny and dazzling to impress my parents so they wouldn't think i have a slob for a housemate. he didn't. i let it go. several other half-efforts here and there, mostly talk, no action. for my birthday, ... well you know the story. but i'm not letting it go this time. if this is how he treats his so-called "best friend", thanks but no thanks, i don't want to be his best friend. good luck to the rest of you being his friend, because i am done being his friend. i'm not joking. i take friendship very seriously. he apparently doesn't. so i'm taking this end of friendship very seriously too.
wow, when he leaves a place he does seem to go to some lengths to napalm things on the way out. From what you wrote @cybette seems you gave enough warnings over a few months, so it is all on him now!
Try to think about the nice things that happened during the tripku, and not the last few bits
I have some great stories to tell about how my guys friends roomed together and lived la chiq pig style, but even they didnt leave used undies on other's bed. Ewww... It's like a bio hazard!
And @ymb, how come you are posting exactly what I wanted to post? damn! :)
@cybette: Don't let an inconsiderate and boundary-less housemate ruin your birthday tripku.
You aren't out of line. If you made some specific requests upon moving in, ie your room is yours, and the housemate in question can't respect that, then they need to pay up and move out.
I got an email earlier today about how i was putting them (our mutual friends) in an awkward situation. I'm really sorry, I wouldn't do it if i could help it. Those of you who know me well enough will know that i don't like drama. All i have to say is, you didn't have to live with this guy. And if he was just an inconsiderate housemate, that would have been easier too. I'd have kicked him out long ago and be done with that. But i regarded him as a good friend and helped him whenever he asked (sometimes even before he asked). Not that i demanded or even expected anything in return, but his actions and disrespect just hurt too much. If you want a crazy guy to party with or smart guy to chat with, sure, go ahead and keep him as a friend. But if you take him in when he needs a place to stay, just know that he might repay you in unexpected ways, like leaving a little present on your HAIRBRUSH on some mornings - yes, you guesseed it, his dirty underwear.
And i'm going to remove my name from his bank account and saunalahti post-paid account. (no, i never touched his funds, i have basic decency and respect for people.) I'm sure he can find another sponsor, he has so many friends, right? And maybe he can also find out for himself if his so-called girlfriends will do for him half as much as what i've done for him.
I just read this thread now. My advice to you would have been, and still is, to throw the fucker out. And if someone is stupid enough to complain that you are putting them in an awkward position, I'd recommend they rethink a bit. It's the inconsiderate slob who's putting your mutual friends in an awkward position, not you.
Oh dear. No. Nononono. I've had roommates over half my life, and there is absolutely no good reason to sleep in your roommate's bed if they've asked you not to, unless yours is on fire and the floor full of spikes and broken glass.

Greece is hot in the summer. Just remember it in a few months when it is cold in Tampere. ;o)
Here in SoCal, we have been having a relatively 'chilly' summer, only in the late 20s/early30s C. An El Nino is supposed to start.
