I know the use case is different, Dopplr is for travelling from
city to city whereas Plazes is more about going from work to home
to the movie theater to bars... but in Dopplr you can find who are
in the area where you're heading to, or who is coming to your city
in the near future. I can't find that in Plazes... am I missing
something? That's the most useful feature such a service can
provide
I don't think it's there in plazes, I think there's half a
solution right now, but it'd be cool to stick these services
together, so add in a feed from Dopplr for example, I wish that
plazes, brightkite what ever could pull the location out of jaiku
too. I just interested to watch how they develop over the next 6
months or so.
They are totally different ... Plazes is more like Brightkite or
Fire Eagle (which it can work with) and adds a location layer to
something else. I am not sure people are going to switch to a
microblog service because it does location, but adding that info as
an key piece of context is valuable - like Jaiku does already and
nicely integrated.
At the moment I find Dopplr really useful for single trips,
trying to add our road trip into it is proving a little difficult
though, it seems to set them all up as separate trips. I've now
removed all the in-between parts of the trip and just added it as a
long trip to Tampere by plane.
I was looking forward to having the Flickr feed on the trip page
so I don't want to split the trip into different pages if I can
help it.
I would argue that, despite the capability within Plazes for
future events, it would seem that Plazes is about what and where
you are now, whereas Dopplr is more about where you will be.
my 0.02€ - Plazes was copied by Brightkite, but brightkite got
all of the twitterarti interested.
I never saw the use of them myself. Plazes was too hard to
update, as I work on many different computers through the week, i
am not going to installer their little applet thingie, and logging
into a website to set your location - FAIL
(especailly if you are used to Jaiku :)
Regarding Plazes Vs Dopplr - Dopplr is trips (which i am sort of
getting now), plazes is location (which by itself is not that
useful)
plazes and fireeagle are linked, but it's out of plazes ... not
back in. They need to enable status from other places into plazes.
Yet another place to update is yuck. Even with Ping.fm - which does
not yet support plazes.
@ymb totally agree on the
brightkight / twitter bit. Though brightkite is way too hard to
deal with imho.
A small curve-ball... not very 'web 2.0', but WAYN.com creates a
whole 'site' for each trip, you can add blog posts, photos, reviews
of cities, etc. Possibly the only thing I like WAYN for anymore,
they lost me ages when they updated their site and merged all my
separate trips into about 10 trips spanning years.

@robevans, looks like I should still try and make my Jaiku-Fireeagle-Plazes integrator then, I'll get back to work on it at some point then.

D'oh, I should read all the comments before commenting myself... Plazes works with Fire Eagle? good good.

Just joined Plazes. Adding a few people I know from Jaiku. Will add more later.
